Growth of Wakatū Group
Wakatū began in 1977 with assets of $11 million. In 1987 we made our first purchase of land for horticulture and in 1992 our first investment in seafood through a joint venture purchasing paua quota.
1998 saw the launch of Tohu Wines, New Zealand’s first Māori owned wine company. Kono was established in 2011 to consolidate all of our food and beverage businesses, enabling multi-product marketing and group supply arrangements, as well as opportunities for external investment.
Our health-solutions business, AuOra, was formed in 2019. Wakatū today is one of the largest private landowners in the Nelson and Tasman region with over 70% of our assets held in land.
